Why is DXF mentioned here as Open. Believe this is a file format owned and maintained by AutoDesk. Being text based and reasonably well documented it is however often considered open. It is true that DXF is often used outside the autodesk sphere. Personal belief is that 3d is where the world is heading. For presenting annotated 2d extracts from 3d, several open formats exist, among them SVG.
