In essence, the Level of Detail can be thought of as input to the element, while the Level of Development is a reliable output.

The planing process in building industry is usually separated into several stages, mostly for contractual and legal reasons. In most countries it follows a similar structure:

  • Concept study
  • Documentation for building permission
  • Construction documentation

usually with even finer levels, for feasibility, cost estimation, etc.

These stages are usually documented with different amount of information, (however not necessarily only in one direction, some information is for example necessary for building permission documentation, but irrelevant for construction documentation) the so called level of detail. The ability to control the LOD (both 2D and 3D) of the handed over documentation is a very important capability of a design software.
